Mailbox Migration Exchange 2010 to 2013 very slow

I'm experiencing very slow migrations:  A 700MB mailbox took 4 hours.  I Have 3,800 mailboxes to move, at this rate it will take two years to complete going 24/7/365.

Does anyone have any ideas?  This is running from a 2010 DAG to a 2013 DAG, all servers have latest updates, service packs, etc.  DAG status is all healthy.

2010 = Update Rollup 8-v2 for Exchange Server 2010 Service Pack 3 (KB2986475) 14.3.224.2
2013 = Exchange Server 2013 Cumulative Update 7 (KB3040856) 15.0.1044.29

What can be done to speed this up?

E-mails migration

How can we migrate users from exchange server 2010 to new exchange server 2013. The two exchange environments are different. Once we installed new exchange server 2013, how do we import all exchange 2010 users mails into new exchange 2013.

Move mailbox from 2010 to 2013, and then back to 2010 - cant then migrate to 2013 again!

Sorry for the long title, but I cant think of any other way of putting it.

We are testing an Exchange 2010 - 2013 upgrade/migration and as part of the testing we migrated a mailbox from 2010 to 2013, and then moved it back to 2010 again - for testing purposes. Now, when we try and migrate it back from 2010 to 2013 we can select it, initiate the job, but within a couple of seconds the number of mailboxes to move drops to 0 (zero) and then the job completes, with no errors at all, but the mailbox is still on the 2010 Information Store.

Now, we dont plan on doing this but is this unique to use, or is this a bug/feature? Exchange 2010 is at SP3 with UR8MK2, and Exchange 2013 is with SP1/UR8.

Thanks

Phil

Office mail merges are extremely slow after upgrade to Exchange 2013

Ever since we migrated from Exchange 2007 to 2013 SP1, our employees have reported that mail merges are taking triple the amount of time to send messages. What used to take an hour is now 3 to 4 hours. Some offices are required to send upwards of 6,000 messages at a time. I know Exchange 2013 handles throttling differently than previous versions however the default (global) ThrottlingPolicy was sufficient with our previous 2007 installation. I've never had to deal much with Throttling so I'm not exactly sure of what settings I should be looking at....also I'm not sure if this would even be related to throttling. Has anyone experienced this issue before with Exchange 2013 and could you provide any recommendations or settings that I need to be focusing on in relation to Outlook client connections? We are currently using the GlobalThottlingPolicy for all users.

/PrepareDomain Question

Client has a root domain and several child domains.  Exchange 2007 servers are installed in the root domain.  The server roles are distributed - MB, HT and CAS.   Some child domains have a single Exchange 2007 server with combined roles and some child domains have a single Exchange 2010 server with combined roles.  All Exchange servers in all domains are part of the same Exchange Organization.  A migration of mailboxes on root domain MB servers only to Office 365 is planned.  A hybrid server Exchange 2013 server will be deployed in the root domain to support the migration.   To support this, which child domains should setup.exe /preparedomain:<fqdn> be run against?

Thanks in advance.

Migration from SBS 2011 to 2012R2 & Exchange 2013 setup failing

$

Dear Experts,

We are in the middle of testing a migration of an SBS 2011 (running Exchange 2010) over to Server 2012 R2 with Exchange 2013 installed. Trying to install Exchange 2013 on our new 2012 R2 (setup as a replica server in the existing SBS domain) but it always fails with an error:

“One or more servers in the existing organization are running Exchange 2000 Server or Exchange Server 2003. Installation can’t proceed until all Exchange 2000 or Exchange 2003 servers are removed.”

We definitely don’t have any 2000 or 2003 Exchange Servers in our environment. Pre-Requisites Software has been installed. The exisiting SBS 2011 already undergone a swing migration from SBS 2003 – could this be the problem? This migration went flawless and we followed official Microsoft documentation.

Thanks for your advise/help.

Removing an old non-existent Exchange 2003

Having run an Exchange BPA, we see an old reference to the old SBS 2003 which used to run Exchange 2003. How can we remove entries to this so that we can install Exchange 2013?

Cheers, Oliver

New server in org can't receive mail

Hi, I have a 2 node Exchange 2013 DAG running CU5 that is having problems and have built 3 new servers to replace the 2.  We will create a new DAG.  Yesterday I installed Exchange 2013 with CU8 and the install completed successfully with no issues. I have a mailbox on the new server that I can connect to using OWA and send mail with no issues.  When I send mail to the mailbox on the new server, the message hangs on either of the existing servers in the Unreachable Domain queue with the error that "There is currently no route to the mailbox database."

Troubleshooting to this point:

Restart Transport service on server1 and server2
Matched configuration for receive connectors between server3 and the other 2.
Messages sent from server3 to a mailbox on server1 or server2 is delivered fine.
Replies and messages sent from server1 or server2 to a mailbox on server3 are not delivered.

What am I missing?

Mobile Devices Prompt for Password/Remote Connectivity Analyzer is Fine

I'm in the middle of migrating from Ex2007 to Ex2013. This is a simple setup with a single server running Ex2007. Port forwarding on the firewall redirects incoming port 443 to Ex2007 for activesync/owa, etc. Exchange 2013 has been installed and configured. Both are coexisting fine. I've moved one mailbox. Exchange 2013 has a valid wildcard SSL certificate.

Now, I change the port forward on the firewall to direct 443 to the new server instead of the old. Remote Connectivity Analyzer connects and verifies that everything is fine for both the migrated mailbox as well as mailboxes that are still on Ex2007. However, for all mailboxes (the migrated one as well as all of the ones still on Ex2007), iPhones repeatedly prompt for password. Entering your password does no good. If you remove the account from the iPhone and add it back then everything is fine. The problem is that we have about 100 phones and doing this to each will be a nightmare. I changed port forwarding back to the old server until we can figure this out. Has anyone else run into this issue? To emphasize, ActiveSync is working fine. I have also found that, instead of removing the Exchange account and adding it back to the iOS device, you can just go into account settings, change a field and save, causing the iOS device to re-verify. After that, you are fine. Any ideas?

Unable to logon to Exchange Admin Center - bad username/password

Dear Experts,

We are in the middle of testing a migration of an SBS 2011 (running Exchange 2010 SP1) over to Server 2012 R2 with Exchange 2013 installed. The new 2012 R2 has all FSMO roles.

After the successful Installation of Exchange 2013, we are unable to logon to the Exchange Admin Center (https://localhost/ecp). Says bad username or password. My admin is a member of the “Organization Management” Exchange Security Group.

Any ideas? Thanks, Oliver

User Access to Public folders durring migration

I built a test environment in preparation for a migration I am doing. I have a 2007 and 2013 set up.

After I moved the test users from the 2007 exchange server to the 2013 server, they can no longer open the public folders still in the 2007 environment. The error is "the server mailbox cannot be opened because this address book entry is not a mail user.".

The Public Folders will eventually be migrated, but I want to ensure users will still have access to them as they are migrated. What step am I missing?

Legacy Email Address Polcies - Delete or Upgrade?

$

I've just completed a migration of 300 users to Exchange Online from Exchange 2007.  I've got an on-prem Hybrid Server (Exchange 2013) along with a DirSync server.  I now want to decommission the Exchange 2007 server infrastructure.

The problem is the legacy (Exchange 2003) Email Address Policies on the Exchange 2007 Server.  There are several Policies and they are all unwanted including the default Email Address Policy which applies incorrect attributes.

My question is this: Can I simply delete ALL Email Address Policies on the Exchange 2007 server?  I can view the policies on the 2013 Hybrid server.  They cannot be edited on the 2007 Exchange server without first being upgraded, but I seem to be able to delete them (successfully delete 2 that are known to be obsolete).

I've read TechNet articles about upgrading the Policies but I'm concerned that incorrect attributes will be applied in the process of upgrading. I'd prefer to just delete them.  Is there anything I should know before deleting the Default Email Address Policy, or any other Email Address Policy?  I assume I can just create a new Default Email Address policy on the Exchange 2013 server once the defunct legacy Policies have been deleted.  Is this correct?

2003 to 2012 and question to decomission exchange 2003 or simply turn off

Hello,

I am planning the upgrade from a 2003 domain to 2012, but I have an old exchange 2003 server not being used, as I have fully migrated to office365 - with cutover migration (No hybrid deployment).

1. Can I simply turn off the exchange server?

2. If I decommission the exchange server, I assume that all exchange attributes are removed, if so, does this create an issue with upgrading domain to 2012 after?  or using DirSync with password sync for office365 later?

Thank you for any input.

URL consolidation

Hi,

In my environment we have Exchange 2010 running with 8 servers which is holding 3 mailboxes and rest is HUB /CAS. E2k10 is configured in such a way that users from two different region using two different URLs mail.abc.com & yurmail.abc.com.

I want to consolidate to one URL as mailboxes are 5000 + users, I have F5 load balancer in place, anyone please suggest how to achieve this.

I don't want to disturb any setting at client end and autodiscover, activesync and other things should work.

Exchange 2013 failed CU1 to CU5 update. Trying to get CU1 working again

$

Hello all,

Currently running a single server installation of Exchange 2013 CU1 on Server 2008 R2.

Checked prerequisites for updating to CU5 and all looked good.

Launched the CU5 install via GUI, not command prompt, which from what I remember when I installed CU1 using the GUI didn't work very well.

Anyway, CU5 failed telling me I have to uninstall CU1. Checked a couple forums and found the same answer.

Tried to uninstall CU1 via Programs and Features, but that failed because it couldn't find a file. Also tried Change and that errors out saying the installation failed and to run setup from an installation media location.

So, I enabled the services that where disabled by either the CU5 install or the CU1 uninstall and started chasing and correcting errors. I've got it to the point that where it looks like everything is working, but I can't send or receive. I'm trying to find an error message somewhere, but I'm not having any luck finding any.

I've tried to use the Queue Viewer and suspend the queue, but nothing shows up in the queue. I've looked at send and receive connectors and they look OK.

I've been up all night and I'm at a loss right now and could really use some help getting this train back on the tracks.

Thank you,

Dennis
