Planning on AD Domain Name Change - What happens next?

Team,
The company in question has a "company.private" domain name setup... from the days of separating the private network from a registered domain name.. running Server Std 2012 and Exchange 2013 CU2. A fully functional (problem free) domain, receiving email just fine both from outside world and internal (clients, outlook and MFPs)....
There was a posting relating to the new SSL certification  - see below for snippet..

My question and concern is, I wish to take my existing domain "xxx.private" and rename the domain to "xxx.com" to prepare for SSL certificates changes, and to match the company's registered domain... for clean network.

What happens to Exchange??, The company is small, has 9 users, but Gigs of email… it would be a worlds end if all that is lost.  Please advise on how to rename AD with an operational Exchange 2013… and have Exchange work with name change. New install of Exchange? Build new Exchange VM, migrate user data? ANY and all advice appreciated!

Thanking you in advance....
