Trying to upgrade 2003AD to 2008AD causing mail flow issues between MSX2007 and MSX2013

Hi,

I am not sure where to ask this question, so be gentle if this is the wrong place.

We have a mixed MSX 2007 (Server 2003R2) and MSX 2013 (Server 2008R2) environment that works OK. We also have a mixed 2003AD and 2008AD environment which also works OK.

We are trying to get rid of 2003AD and are down to the last one. It is in the same site as the MSX 2007 and MSX 2013 servers.

Today, I powered off the last  2003AD server so that only 2008AD servers were online. It was then that I noticed (from my point of view) email sent from a mailbox on MSX2013 to a mailbox on MSX2007 was slow to get through (I received notification of a three hour delay). Mail between mailboxes on the same servers are OK.

I started the 2003AD server back up again and mail seems to be back to normal.

I have noticed however that the Exchange Servers are logging MSExchangeSA 9385 errors about being unable to read the membership of the 'Exchange Servers' security group.

This only began when we first tried shutting down the remaining 2003AD server. The error continued even though the 2003AD server is back online.

Our plan is to shutdown 2003AD server and reboot all of the email servers, so they are forced to deal with a 2008AD server to see if this resolves the problem.

Does anyone have any ideas why this mail flow problem may occur when the 2003AD server is offline?

Thanks in advance for your help.
