I have just found a folder on the C: drive of my SBS 2011 server that includes "spinstall.exe" along with another random hex num folder that includes many dll files for the install I'm assuming. This folder has a capacity of 4.5GB.
C:\Folder[4.5G]\spinstall.exe[591K]
C:\Folder[4.5G]\Folder[4.35G]
Can this folder be deleted? I have searched and there is the same spinstall.exe file in the windows/system folder. I believe this service pack update was for exchange but I guess it could also be for SBS2011 though it still shows SP1. Exchange is now as SP3.
Please let me know if this is a folder that can be deleted. I know after many other different installs, folders will be left behind on the C:\ directory were the files were extracted to and installed from.
Can anyone clarify how SPs or any other applications are installed and where the files are stored for the OS to run them. Such as C:\ProgramData or C:\Users\<user>\AppData. I just want to make sure that files that are required by the OS such as drivers, SPs, updates, applications, etc. are NOT stored on the local drive at C:\ where they are not hidden from users. I would assume that when windows installs something that it stores the required files in a folder that is hidden from users by default. If I am wrong, please let me know. If someone can clarify this then it would help out not only this situation but all that scenarios when someone needs to know if it is safe to delete unknown files and if it will effect the OS.
Thank you for all the help.
Thank you in advance for your help.
