Exchange 2013 - Deployment and placement of CAS and MBX servers.

Hi All,

We are about to embark on an Exchange 2013 deployment in our organization, we have read a lot of information about the architectural changes in Exchange 2013 and wondered if somebody might be able to offer an opinion on a couple of things before we begin in earnest.

In simple terms our organization consists of a single AD domain spread across 10 geographic sites.  Approximately 750-1000 users will be using our Exchange infrastructure.

What we are proposing is the following:

(1) To deploy a single Exchange 2013 CAS server in a site of high connectivity and availability and use this CAS server as single point of entry for all users connecting in via OWA or using mobile devices.

(2) To deploy a local Exchange 2013 CAS and MBX server in each separate AD site to host the mailboxes of the local users to that site.

From what we have read we understand that, (providing the configuration is setup correct) any requests sent to this central CAS server, will be analyzed and redirected to the local Exchange box in the site in which the clients' mailbox resides.  Have we interpreted this correctly?

Also, if we are going to have a centralized CAS server for our whole Exchange organization, do we need to also have a local CAS server in each site? Would a MBX only server in each site suffice?

Thank you in advance.
